Digital Discovery: The New Face Of Green Lace…
It seems Flickr is now more than just a site to go to for looking a pretty pictures; it’s also the place to be if you want to try spot a new species. This green lacewing was photographed by Malaysian photographer Hock Ping Guek. After he uploaded the snaps to his Flickr account, they were then subsequently stumbled upon by researcher Shaun Winterton of the California State Collection of Arthropods at the California Department of Food & Agriculture who recognised that this lacy lovely was, in fact, a new species. Fast forward to about a year later and a specimen was collected which enabled he and Stephen J. Brooks of the Natural History Museum in London to formally identify and catalogue the species as Semachrysa jade. Crediting Hock as a co-author, the pair have published their description if the journal ZooKeys.
Unusual as her mode of discovery may be, Semachrysa jade is not exactly what you’d call a unique species within her large Chrysopidae family. In fact, there are anywhere between 1,300 and 2,000 species of green lacewings found world wide. Which makes it a wonder that Winterton ever noticed this newbie at all…
